We’ve always believed in supporting students as they take their first step into the world of work. We currently have the pleasure of hosting Ben, a University student, for his work placement.

Recently, we sat down with Ben to ask him a few questions about his time so far! Here’s what he said…

Q: Can you tell us about your background and the course you are currently studying?

A: I am currently in my 3rd year at Glasgow Caledonian University, studying a BSc Hons in Construction Management. This program offers us an opportunity to gain practical work experience for six months during our third year, which I think is so important in shaping my career in the construction industry.

Q: How did you come across the opportunity to work with Fleming, and what attracted you to join them for work placement?

A: I was keen to find a beneficial placement, and when I learned about Fleming, I was immediately intrigued by their current projects. After having a chat with them and hearing more about their ongoing Passive-Haus development, I became excited to be a part of their team.

Q: Can you share your experiences and responsibilities as an assistant project/site manager at the Passive-Haus development in Bonnyrigg?

A: As an assistant project/site manager, I have had an amazing learning experience. I have been actively involved in various tasks, such as organising and managing deliveries, communicating with sub-contractors via email, and engaging in meetings with council representatives to discuss project progress. It has been my first opportunity to work on a construction site, and I am happy to be able to apply the knowledge I gained in my first two years at university to real-life situations.

Q: How have the Fleming team supported you during your work placement?

A: I have been incredibly fortunate to work with a great team at Fleming. Everyone on the site has been welcoming and friendly, making me feel like an integral part of the team from the very start.

Q: What are your overall impressions of the work placement so far?

A: While everything is new to me, I am enjoying the learning process. The opportunity to learn and grow while building relationships with colleagues on-site is so valuable. I am really grateful to Mike and Tony for giving me this chance to develop my skills and knowledge.
