Fleming was appointed by East Renfrewshire Council to deliver the formation of a new nursery at St John’s Primary School in Barrhead, supporting the Council’s commitment to high-quality early learning and childcare provision.
Both careful planning and phasing were required by the team as construction was delivered within a live school environment. This £1.8m project involved the internal alteration, reconfiguration and refurbishment of existing office and storage spaces to create a modern, purpose-built nursery. The new facility provides bright, spacious playrooms, dedicated quiet areas and high-quality outdoor learning environments, designed to support early childhood development within a safe and nurturing environment.
The internal works included the removal and formation of structural and non-structural walls, installation of new partitions, full replacement of roof coverings with an insulated system and upgrades to windows (installing high performance Nordan windows), doors and toilets. To ensure the environment was as welcoming as possible, a new reception counter and screen were installed, with a high standard of finish throughout including decoration.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing services were carefully integrated into the existing school infrastructure, with works phased and carried out during out-of-school-hours to minimise disruption.
Externally, works included the creation of a new car park and access road, transformation of the existing car park into a secure nursery playground and installation of new play equipment, access ramps and a covered canopy.
Working closely with the school’s management team, Fleming’s expertise ensured the safe continuation of daily school operations at St John’s Primary while maintaining quality and following timelines. The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget, providing a modern, nurturing early years centre that will serve the Barrhead community for years to come.
