Fleming has officially broken ground on a new £6.7 million early years and community facility in the Milton area of Glasgow, which will house both Scaraway Nursery and the charity North United Communities (NUC).
Set for completion in summer 2026, the purpose-built facility is being delivered on behalf of Glasgow City Council and hub West Scotland, bringing together nursery provision, third sector services, and learning opportunities under one roof. The development is located on the former site of the Glasgow School for the Deaf, returning the land to educational and community use.
To mark the beginning of construction, Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren visited the site this week, joining local representatives, children, members of NUC, council officers and the construction team to view progress.
Designed to accommodate 95 children, the new nursery will include four playrooms, dining space, offices, a general-purpose area and direct access to outdoor play. The adjoining community facility will provide flexible office and activity space – including a large hall and breakout rooms – designed to support a wide range of local services and events.
The project is the result of close collaboration between Glasgow City Council, North United Communities and Glasgow Caledonian University, and is being supported by funding from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund.
Jill McKay, CEO of North United Communities, said: “I’m just so excited and thrilled for everyone in the community. This is going to be a great asset to Milton’s residents – a purpose-built place where they can access a variety of learning and social opportunities.”
Mike Burrows, Managing Director at Fleming, added: “This is exactly the kind of project we’re passionate about delivering. It’s a community-led development with long-term impact, supporting families, local organisations, and future generations. We’re proud to be working with such committed partners and look forward to bringing this vital facility to life.”
This is the latest in a series of community-focused projects delivered by Fleming, who continue to work closely with local authorities and third sector partners to provide high-quality, sustainable buildings that make a lasting difference.
